A Flipside exercise

Hosted by [SleepingDragon]

<img:stuff/flipdiv.gif>

This is an exercise about writing dialog. A common thorn in our side when writing such passages is over use of the word "said". This can make the writing seem stilted and unimaginative, interupting the flow for the reader. We will therefore try an exercise wherein you are limited in your use of "said"s

Criteria for submission

1. 500-2000 words, Primarily dialog. You may have a few short paragraphs to move things along and keep action going.

2. Use the word 'said' no more than 3 times in the passage.

3. If You do use the word 'said', it should be preceeded by or followed by an adverb. Ex: Lara said sheepishly, Larry compliantly said.

4. Don't overuse other words just to compensate. We don't need 1000 words of people 'shouting' back and forth. That's just as bad as over use of 'said'. Try to mix it up some.

5. While it is normally acceptable to write dialog without any descriptive verbiage at all, please don't over use this approach here.

6. Use any theme or genre but keep it clean enough for 12 year olds please.

7. Deadline, January 31st, 2006- midnight.

Example:[SleepingDragon]: 268.Master and Student
- 576 words

In the above example, I have used the word "said" once and have one fairly short paragrah without dialog.
